Tapping into Wellness Through Music & Sharing It!
Senior Wellness & Outreach Program
About this Program:
Alive with Music is a joyful and fun participatory program for seniors that promotes drumming and music making as means for enhancing social and emotional wellness, physical engagement and community building. As an exciting outgrowth of this program seniors are trained and mentored to share these engaging music activities with others in their communities. Mary Knysh shares a five-step sequential pathway toward optimal wellness designed to expand self-expression, self-awareness and non-verbal communications which in turn promotes wellness through a sense of identity, value, purpose, belonging and joy.

As a long time teaching artist, performer, clinician, Remo Inc and Rhythm Band Instruments endorser, and international author, Mary Knysh is deeply committed to the positive effects of brain-based experiential music making activities. Participants learn simple, accessible and fun rhythmic activities designed to address the key factors for aging well which include a strong connection to community, healthy social relationships, and positive self-regard.

This Program is Especially Great for:
Seniors, Occupational and Music Therapists, Senior Facility Recreational Managers, Educators, and anyone who loves to create music and wants to explore and expand their own creative potential and facilitate others in the fields of community service, healthcare, and education to do the same. No prior musical experience necessary!
During this program you will learn an approach to music making and creativity that will transform the way you and those you share this with relate, explore, learn and create together!

  • LISTEN: Tune in and warm up with easy brain based rhythmic and movement activities.
  • CONNECT:  Engage in ways to connect and get the group working and thinking together
  • COMMUNICATE:  Explore music as a form of non-verbal communication
  • COLLABORATE/CREATE:  Lots of collaborative rhythmic experimentation
  • INSPIRE:  Expand learning possibilities; share ideas and step into leadership roles
  • TRANSFORM:  Reflect, observe and learn from individual and group experiences
  • REFLECT:  Explore ways to put new skills into action personally and professionally

The Benton Boomers
Follow the "Benton Boomers", our Alive With Music! Senior Ambassadors, as they travel around Columbia County, PA, teaching drum making and conducting drum circles at several Senior Centers during the winter and spring of 2019.  In May 2019 the Boomers became International Senior Ambassadors when they took Alive With Music! to the lovely tropical island of Barbados. Follow their photo story HERE.
