Welcome the Joy of Spring

As the winter season gives way to spring, I am always struck by how glorious a warm sunny day can feel after many months of cold weather. My "Welcome the Joy of Spring" play-along music tracks are a fun way to celebrate the beginning of spring and sunshine. Grab a drum, flute, ukulele, or just sing along and celebrate the beginning of spring in sound!

Vocal Toning 4 Wellness

I ran across a New York Times article in Dec 2021 that refers to the term "languishing" as the mental state that many of us are experiencing these days. Adam Grant, a psychologist and author describes languishing as "the neglected middle child of mental health" and "the void between depression and flourishing ─ the absence of well-being." He concluded, "By acknowledging that so many of us are languishing, we can start giving voice to quiet despair and lighting a path out of the void." I agree with him.

How can we step back into a state of well being? MUSIC has always been the answer for me! Over the years I have shared with you the powerful effect that our voice has to calm, heal, restore, and revitalize us physically and spiritually. As we step into the New Year, I invite you to join me in exploring a daily practice of vocal toning. Research tells us that 7 minutes of vocal toning can have a profoundly positive effect on our bodies and brains, in fact a similar effect to 30 minutes of deep meditation. We can shift our state of body and mind in a 7 short minutes just by taking a breath and sustaining a "one quality" sound!

Many years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Shelley Snow, PhD, from Montreal, Quebec, where she was in the process of a research project exploring the powerful effects of Vocal Toning on the body and brain. The "7 minutes of Vocal Toning" is based upon her fascinating research. We featured Shelly and her incredible work on our Music Alive! series last year. To learn more about her work, check out her Music Alive! session, The Healing Power of Sound. It is truly inspiring!
