Tubano Drum Making Project
It has long been a dream of mine to empower people to create their own drums. I wanted to design a drum pattern that would sound great, be easy to make, and would be very durable. For over 10 years I researched a wide variety of ways to do this. There have been many drum prototypes over this time period, and finally, with the help of my colleagues, BJ and Robyn, we have arrived at our Tubano Drum Kits, created from Quik-Tubes® used in construction.
When Harold Walt purchased our Tubano DELUXE Drum Kits for his school district, we were really excited to see what they would create! This web page shares the joy of learning through drum making that took place at the Roosevelt STEAM Academy. It brings me great joy to see the student's expressions and to read what they had to say about this unique project. "The Roosevelt STEAM Academy drum project was very successful and easy to complete. The students enjoyed coloring the "batter", and making the drum their own. The gluing/rubber band placement, and ironing of the batters, was an easy process. Most of the students, who took their time, were extremely successful with applying the fabric to the sides of the drums. The students really enjoyed the activity and are looking forward to performing with them in front of the school board." Bryan Nowakowski, STEAM Director, Roosevelt STEAM Academy

Students Take Ownership of Their Drums
"As a teacher, I was fully involved with ensuring my students were successful with their projects, which, disappointingly, meant I wasn't able to make my own drum. I was jealous! What impressed me most about the project was the way the children took ownership of their drums and how they were made, and how much each student was involved with the process. No one sat by idly and watched; all were fully invested in what they were doing. Watching that happen created a number of exciting moments!" Tim Myers, Teacher at Roosevelt STEAM Academy
What the Kids are Saying"This was a good project to learn about culture, and music. It was also engaging, and fun to make. It lets you show your personality, and customization. This was hard but fun and in the end you get your very own drum." Braden M
"We had a lot of fun when we made Tubano drums. We had fun because we got to do it our selfs!!! Personally the thing I had fun with making the drums was drawing on it and putting rubber bands on the sides." Drake D
"I loved this project, but it wasn't easy. It wasn't too hard either, it was just right! My teachers helped me by gluing the top fabric with me. Everything I learned was really fun. Thank you! Sincerely," Aneri M
"Making drums is fun. First you put the head covering on the base of the drum. Next you put the rubber bands on to keep the head covering on. Now you put fabric on the drum with glue and iron the head covering. Finally put duck tape on the drum for reinforcing the glue and for decorating. That's all the end. [It's hard]" Liam W
Making the drums were really fun. I liked how we got to be creative and we got to have fun making them. Everyone was really helpful to each other which made it a bit more fun. I learned that fun things can take time but at the end it's all worth it at the end. Also that some things are easy and hard but that's what makes it fun. So thank you for letting us be creative and have fun making the drums. It's honestly REALLY FUN!!!!!!!!!" Katherin C
"I had fun when I was decorating drums, especially learning how to do so. I also like when I could see everyone else's drums, and I thought it was amazing for us to play anything we wanted on our drums." Liam M
Making Tubanos! This was the most fun project I have ever done! I personally loved building the Tubano because it showed me that you can learn about more than one subject at a time! Though it was a little difficult at times I feel that this project is for almost everyone! If there is anything I can say to this company, THANK YOU!" Natalie T
"I liked this project. It was a fun project. It wasn't too hard for me to do. The best part was coloring the fabric. There were a lot of colors to choose from." Jesse R
"These projects are not easy, but just right for most people. Personally, my favorite part was duck taping around the outside. Something challenging about this project is putting on the rubber bands. The sessions were clear with all questions answered and the adults helped us a lot. This project is so fun that I can't understand why someone who like art, building, and/or music wouldn't want to do it." Theresa P
"This project was very fun playing them will be a blast. I learned new things about drums, music, and art I can't wait to do more projects like this." Caden S
"Hey, if you want to have fun get the drum kit. If you're a musical or creative person come along and make it. Where you can put your talents into a drum. I thought it was amazing fun." Alexis W
Hello my name is Connor H and I want to tell you about my class making Tubanos. For our project the first thing we had to do was to put white fabric on the top of the drums with rubber bands. The next thing we had to do was glue the side fabric on. The next thing we had to do was duck tape it down. But it is harder then it looks. And this is all. BYEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!" Conner H
